Jump into your SongSidekick adventure

  1. Schedule your sessions at a time and place that’s convenient for you. Start this week or a month from now—it’s up to you. Write your song from anywhere in the world. We’ll meet via video conference.

  2. Give me some details about what you have in mind so that I’m ready for our first session. Look for some questions from me in your email.

  3. Sign on to the video conference with an adventurous mind and minimal distractions. No need to arrive with a plan for your song (although it’s fine if you do). (One exception: The SongSidekick basic package assumes you have written either the music or the lyrics before we meet.)

  4. Enjoy the journey. I’ve got you. I’ll walk you through to finished song.

FAQs

  • A session usually runs 90-120 minutes. Each one is tailored to you, and no two are exactly alike. A representative example:

    First session

    1. We’ll talk for a bit about who you are and what’s on your mind these days. I’ll take some notes.
    2. I’ll help you shape your thoughts and ideas into an overall concept for the song.
    3. We’ll pull together a few lines of lyrics from things you’ve said—maybe this will become the chorus, or a verse.
    4. We’ll experiment with some different musical ideas for the lyrics until we have a song part you’re excited about.

    Second session

    1. We’ll check in, see how you’re feeling about the song, and make any necessary changes
    2. We’ll write music and lyrics for an additional section of the song.
    3. We’ll put it all together and I’ll leave you with a simple guitar and vocal recording of your song.

  • If you’ve ever had a song stuck in your head, or if you sometimes sing your favorite tunes in the shower, your brain understands melody. SongSidekick can help you unlock your intuitive melodic sense, even if you have no experience with an instrument or singing.

  • Yes! You’ll write the song, not me, so it’s yours. You maintain sole copyright, credit, and publishing rights for your song.

There are some restrictions on how you can use the recording of me singing your song. You’re welcome (and encouraged!) to share the recording with friends and family in person, via email, on social media, etc. But you can’t commercially release my recording of your song. This means you can’t put my recording on a music streaming service; license it for use in film, TV, or commercials; offer it to radio; or otherwise generate revenue from it. If you’d like to use your song for commercial purposes, you’ll need to make your own recording. I’m happy to refer you on to someone who will help.

  • Only if you share it with them. I treat everything you share or write during our sessions as confidential.

  • I’m a lover of a good song and I listen widely to many kinds of music. I can help you write a song in whatever genre you love. That said, I have the most expertise in the following genres:

    • Rock

    • Pop/Indie

    • Folk/Americana

    • Country

    • Musical theater/American songbook

    • Punk

    • Old school soul/R&B

  • You’ll finish a complete song—lyrics, melody, and chords. If you’d like, I’ll make a simple recording of myself singing and playing your song so that you can share it with family and friends.

If you want to record your own version of the song, with full instrumentation or your own vocals, you may need to take your finished song to a producer. I can offer you a referral if you’d like.
